CHAPTER 8

“So…about Jenny,” I said loud enough to end all other discussions.

Everyone was showered and just hanging out in my room. Jerry would be sleeping on my futon, while Ken and Jeremy were in the other guest bedrooms.

Silence. Jerry’s face changed from the laughing exprssion to seriousness. Ken just looked downward. Whereas Jeremy and myself just sat waiting for the big reveal.

Jerry cleared his throat first, “Well…where do you think I should begin Ken. If I don’t give enough back story it doesn’t quite make sense?”

Ken finally lifted his head, but only to ponder looking at the ceiling. It really seemed like he was attempting to make no eye contact. “Hmmm…maybe just start on the first day of school… maybe I should tell it since I was actually there. You can pick up when you came home. Deal?”

“Yep, all good,” Jerry gestured to Ken to continue.

“Okay…”

.-.-.-.

First Day Of School

“Hey Jenny,” Ken called to Jenny who was across the yard with Brit.

Jenny and Brit came running over, “Hey Ken! How is the first day being back without George and Jerry? Are you missing them terribly,” Jenny and Brit hugged each other and pretended to be sobbing.

“Not cool. But yes. I am missing them. It’s going to be a long two years if I’m stuck with just this one,” Ken pointed at the slowly apporaching Matthew.

“Hey Jenny. Hey Brit,” Matthew called to them as he approached, “You ready for these next two years?”

“Wow…no acknowledgement for your only friend here,” Ken tried to punch Matthew but missed and toppled forward; he was sprawled on the ground because Matthew had swiftly dodged it.

Matthew started to walk away, but paused by the girls, “Do you two hear anything? No? Okay, let’s head to our classrooms.” Matthew reached over a grabbed Brit’s wrist starting to pull her along with him. Jenny followed.

“Sure just ignore me; me on the ground. I know, you know I am here, or you would not have dodged me,” Ken picked himself up and ran to catch up to his leaving gang. “No love for me. Matthew only cares about Brit I guess…” Whack! Ken almost fell to the floor again. “What do you mean by…” Ken started to say but Matthew cut him off.

“Sorry you too,” Matthew apologetically waved to Jenny and Brit, who were quite shocked by Matthew’s sudden hit, “I was swatting away a giant bug. I really do hate bugs who keep pestering me,” Matthew carefully glared in the direction of Ken without actually looking at him.

Laughter erupted from Jenny and Brit. Matthew also chuckled. Ken did begrudingly, but he did laugh more as they continued to their own homeroom classes.

“What do you know… I was hoping to see her, but I didn’t realize I would meet her on our first day,” a voice came from behind us.

Ken paused, “Why does that voice sound familiar?” Turning around, he realized why. There stood Jerk Jeremy’s two best buds. ‘What do they mean their “first day?”‘

Matthew and the girls also turned.

“So…Jenny, right? How have you been? Now that your guard dog George is gone, do you think I could, you know…” Derek, the backstroker, walked towards Jenny with a smug smirk. Before anyone could move he was next to Jenny attempting to put his arm over her shoulders.

“What’s your problem?” Matthew shoved Derek away from Jenny; he took up his spot in front of both Jenny and Brit. “Don’t touch her!”

“What’s it to you? Jeremy told us about how she is…” the other one spoke, his name was Trevor.

“Shut up,” Ken had Trevor by the collar and was ready to retaliate if need be. “That was just a stupid rumor that died the day we schooled you at that swim meet.”

Other students who were originally ignoring what was happening, had changed their plans, and were now creating a mob around our exchange. We could see phones all around us, probably trying to capture, what was happening, as a viral video. Jenny was silent and cowering behind Matthew. Brit was somewhat stronger; she was trying to support Jenny, as Jenny was beginning to falter.

“How about this, you can date her first and then I will…THUD!” Derek was sprawled on the floor.

Matthew had done the honors. Derek wasn’t moving, but he was breathing.

Trevor threw Ken off of him, and ran over to the almost unconsious Derek, “Are you crazy!?! What’s so wrong about speaking the truth. Jeremy gave us all the facts before we switched schools. I don’t know why you are protecting her anyways.”

Matthew walked up to Trevor and squatted down to his level, “Do I need to silence you too?”

Trevor hesitated and seemed to lean away from Matthew.

“Good. Then shut up,” Matthew stood up just as Brit called…

“Help!” Jenny had collapsed into her arms; Brit was craddling the unconscious Jenny in her lap as she sat on the floor.

Both Ken and Matthew rushed to Brit.

“Give her to me,” Matthew quickly placed his backpack next to Brit and scooped up the limp Jenny, carrying her to the nurse’s office.

Brit grabbed Matthew’s backpack, and then both Ken and her ran after Matthew, weaving between the onlookers. Leaving Trevor and Derek still on the floor…

CHAPTER 7

Jerry was determined; he of course won. His reward was to throw Ken in the pool. I must admit it was hysterical. Ken splashed dramatically asking someone to “save him.” Jeremy was the one who reacted, but he used a floaty to fish him out.

“I was not about to get wet. It’s cold out here,” Jeremy pulled Ken up out of the water.

“I know now who my true friend is,” Ken attempted to drape his arm over Jeremy’s shoulder. He gave up after two failed attempts, because the moment was gone.

We were all walking back into the living room, as Mom and Dad came through the front door. “Wow!” Mom exclaimed, “It looks wonderful in here. Thank you so much,” and Mom once again was on her hugging spree.

We all just accepted them, except Ken who was still soaking wet.

“Oh, Ken,” Mom just shook her head.

‘She must be used to this happening.’

“Go shower and change like always. Who did it this time?” Mom gave each of us a questioning look.

Jerry proudly raised his hand; his smirk could be seen from outer space. “This was my doing; believe me he deserved it,” Jerry stood quite proud of himself.

‘I missed this. The guys. Mom. Dad. I will be sad to leave again.’ I looked over at Dad.

“Everything good?” Dad mentally asked raising his eyebrows.

“Yep. All is fine now,” I answered back. ‘Its cool that we still have that capability.’

“Well, am I taking you three home?” Dad picked back up his car keys again.

“Nah Mr. Matthews. I don’t know about these two, but I’m staying the night,” Ken said as he dashed up the stairs to probably go shower.

“What about you two?” Dad turned to Matthew and Jerry.

“I’m staying,” Jerry sat down on the couch. “You?” He asked Matthew.

“I wish I could, but my parents requested my presence. Probably wanting me to make a decision about my future again. So if you don’t mind Mr. Matthews,” Matthew swung his backpack over his shoulder.

“No problem at all,” Dad kissed mom on the cheek and headed back to the door, “I’ll be in the truck,” Dad left.

“I’ll see you tomorrow hopefully, unless my parents forcefully ship me somewhere,” Matthew gave me a quick hug. “See you Jerry,” Matthew waved. “Thank you so much for invinting me Mrs. Matthews,” Matthew called in the direction of the kitchen.

A loud, “Of course!” rang out; we all laughed.

“Tell the idiot I said bye,” Matthew, of course, was talking about Ken.

‘Ha. That’s fitting.’

“Bye Jeremy. It’s cool, one buddy came back and I gained another one,” then Matthew quickly disapeared out the door.

“He is a man of few words, isn’t he?” Jeremy said realxing down into a recliner.

“That was a lot of words for him,” Jerry and I chuckled.

“Well, let’s head up. Hopefully his majesty is done, and he didn’t use all the hot water again,” Jerry started towards the stairs as Jeremy followed.

I grabbed Jerry’s arm stopping him on the fifth step, “Jerry. If we are still awake do you think you can tell me what happened to Jenny?”

“Yeah. I was wondering when you would remember. Let’s get ready for bed first, and then I’ll finish her story. Without rattling this one,” Jerry thumbed at Jeremy.

“Cool. I would rather not be riled up again,” Jeremy shoved Jerry foward to continue up the stairs. “Come on, Geroge,” Jeremy said as he followed Jerry up.

‘I’ve missed this. The guys.’

CHAPTER 6

We still just stood there. I thought once my parents were gone and we were in an empty house, Jerry would just explode. “Well, until you all want to discuss things,” I grabbed some trash bags and headed to the nearest table, “let’s clean up the house. I have to actually do the excuse I gave to an extent.” At first it seemed like Jerry was going to start things, instead he too followed my pursuit and started cleaning. The other three did the same.

‘Fine. If they don’t want to talk I will at least get some help cleaning.’

I was happy for the help, but enough was enough. Jerry was helping, but purposfully bumping into Jeremy; causing Jeremy to fall and making things worse. “Enough! What gives? Are you really so unable to realize that everyone makes stupid mistakes when they were younger,” I walked across the room and helped Jemery stand back up on his feet. “That yeah, he was a jerk in sophmore year,” I paused somewhat to make sure Jeremy understood.

Jeremy regained his composure, “No arguments there. I was definitely an immature jerk back then.”

“Only back then,” Jerry said under his breath.

“Say it loud enough for everyone to here. I thought we were friends. We never kept things to ourselves, we would just say whatever needed to be said to the other’s face. Have you changed so much that you are a coward now?” I was done with the slide remarks. We needed to move past this. Jerry was about to speak but I cut him off; I was not done. “Did you hear what Jeremy said. “An immature jerk.” Immature. Meaning he has now matured.” I could see that Jerry was fuming, but I was too.

“So what if he has matured. Should he really be forgiven for ruining someone’s life? So what if he was…what was it again?” Jerry looked to Ken.

“Verbally abused,” it was Jeremy who answered instead, “and since you have luckily never experienced it before, I would prefer you not speak your mind like you know anything about it,” Jeremy answered calmly, but his body was on edge.

“Fine. I won’t assume anything about what you went through. But can you understand that what you were dished for so many years, you in turn, did it to another human being. A girl,” Jerry waited for a response.

There was none. ‘I’m guessing because Jeremy couldn’t refute that. He did dish what he was served.’

“Why am I the only one chewing him out? What about you Matthew,” Jerry swiftly turned to the silent Matthew. “You had more to say after I got back; what happened to all your opinions?”

I looked at Matthew. He looked down, and then away.

‘What happened?’ Silence…

Slowly Matthew lifted his head back up; he looked me in the eye. It was an apologetic look. Then he turned to Jerry, “I judged Jeremy based solely on rumors. I apologize to you, dude,” Matthew looked to Jeremy, “I apologize for talking behind your back without knowing the facts.” Matthew waited for a response from Jeremy.

Jeremy just nodded.

“Jerry. You have to admit that you were wrong in your assumption. The rumors were that Jeremy was just a spoiled rich kid that just wanted to ruin other’s lives. I’m just quoting the rumors,” Matthew threw up his hands claiming innocence. “But seriously dude, now you know what he experienced throughout his entire young life, how can you still dislike his guts this much?”

Jerry didn’t answer.

“What I am more curious about,” as I spoke Jerry’s head snapped up, “you went to school with Jeremy for the past two years. You moved past your differences quickly. Why did you completely flip your opinion of him after you got home? What happened that I don’t know about?”

“Do you actually care?” Jerry spat out.

“Of course I do. What’s your deal?”

Jerry stepped towards me, “You…” Matthew pulled him back.

“It’s not unreasonable that Jerry said that George,” Ken finally chimed into the conversation. “You haven’t actually been here, virtually or present, these last two years.”

“I…” I stopped and just looked at them. I knew what they were saying was true. But they should understand that there was no way for me to be more present, with my schedule these last two years. “I get it. I know I was not there these lasts two years, but I was so busy. I’m sorry.” We need to get back to the real issue. ‘I do feel somewhat sorry for not being there for the guys these last two years, but I am not sorry about my choice.’

Matthew and Ken both slugged me on the shoulder while answering together, “No problem bro. We weren’t the best at keeping in touch either. School was crazy.”

I let the slugging slide, because we were good now. ‘Now Jerry.’

“Yeah. Fine. We are good,” Jerry said, but didn’t move.

‘That was painful to watch. At least we were past that.’ “So, since we moved past that…can someone tell me what happened?” there might have a tone to my voice, but it was just exhaustion; still, I wasn’t about to end this conversation until I found out the details.

They just looked at each other. Jeremy was silent next to me, but Ken, Matthew, and Jerry seemed to be talking without actually speaking. “Out loud…”

“Jenny was harassed in junior year,” Ken blurted out.

‘What!?!’

Matthew sighed, “Yeah. A couple of your old buds,” regarded Jeremy, “transferred to our school in our junior year. They tormented Jenny for days, saying it was your idea. That you told them to continue your legacy while you were gone,” Matthew looked to me.

I wish he hadn’t. I was fumming. Not at Jeremy, but the thought of what Jenny must have gone through. I couldn’t speak.

“Now do you understand why I hate this guy?” Jerry pointed once again at Jeremy.

“Can you not do that,” Jeremy changed his stance; he was now prepared.

“What? This!” Jerry thrust his hand almost inches from Jeremy’s face.

I reacted. I stopped Jeremy before anything could happen. Jeremy slammed into my back sending me forward into Jerry; we both laid sprawled on the floor. Jeremy just stood there controlling his shaking. I had seen this once before… Jeremy was doing a lot better than last time.

I stood and helped Jerry up. Then I walked over to Jeremy, “You good?”

Jeremy didn’t answer, but the shaking subsided. Before, Jerry’s face would have been rearranged. Jeremy has really changed this past year.

“Is he good?” Ken asked. He had just watched what happened, but seemed glued to the floor.

“Yeah. Just one of the many aftermaths of being abused for years,” Jeremy huffed out, bending over catching his breath. “Sorry,” he was now speaking to Jerry, “the pointing is a trigger. My dad and old coach used to do that, so much that I associate the pointing to what happened to my mom…” Jeremy stopped.

‘A whole new can of worms was just opened.’ I looked at Jeremy; Jeremy seemed annoyed that he said those last words. Silence. All eyes looked at Jeremy; when they got no response, they turned their gaze to me. Again I looked to Jeremy, and he was staring at me. I couldn’t tell if it was a, ‘You talk and your dead stare, or an explain for me stare.’ “I can’t read your mind, dude.”

“Just tell them,” Jeremy sat down on the couch and dropped his head into his hands.

“Jeremy’s mom was almost killed by his dad,” I stopped. With good reason, because all of their faces showed true horror. “Thankfully, his dad was not successful,” I added because I could see the questions forming on their faces. They all sighed of relief. “I know that his dad is serving time now for attempted murder. But the important part is, his…” I looked over a Jeremy’s hunched body; I knew I needed to say the next part, but I didn’t want him to feel the guilt all over again… “after hearing his mom’s side of the story, pointing became a trigger. I guess his dad did it to Jeremy’s mom just before he was going to…you know…” I wasn’t about to say it. “So Jerry, no more pointing,” I sat next to Jeremy; he was still working on his breathing to stay calm.

Matthew and Ken were the first to walk over to where we were sitting. They gave Jeremy reassuring pats on his shoulders. ‘I think Ken smacked him a little too hard, but Jeremy didn’t seem to notice.’ Finally Jeremy lifted his head up; he was calm once again.

We all sat there waiting for the fourth one to own up to his mistakes and put in the effort. I looked at Jerry; his face was still stunned. He wasn’t looking at me; it seemed like he wasn’t really looking anywhere. Finally he moved. Jerry finally stood in front of us. He still looked like he was in a daze. Nothing…

I was about to help him along, but…

Jerry looked up, “I’m…I…” and he dropped his head back down. Silence.

Jeremy got up and extended his hand to Jerry, “We good now?”

Jerry’s head bolted up. He looked at Jeremy’s face and then his hand. He just stood there looking at Jeremy’s hand…

Again, I thought nothing was going to happen, and I was about to smack Jerry out of his daze…

“Yeah. We are good,” Jerry shook Jeremy’s hand. “And…I’m sorry, I…”

“No problem, but no more pointing. I don’t know what would have happened if George didn’t step in between us. Your face might have been rearranged, like the last guy,” Jeremy chuckled.

“Maybe you should have done it,” Ken stood up from his chair, and walked towards Jerry, “he might actually get a date if he had a scar.”

We all laughed. Including Jeremy.

“Sleep with one eye open Ken…one eye,” Jerry stepped towards the laughing Ken.

Jeremy was the one to stop Jerry. “He’s my bud now,” Jeremy said stepping backwards to Ken and swung his arm over Ken’s shoulder.

“I like this,” Ken smuggly nodded accepting Jeremy’s statement this time.

Again we all abrupted with laughter. ‘Good. All things were fine now.’ Looking around I notice that the house was still as messy, as it was when my parents left. “Well since we are good now, do you think we can do a little bit more cleaning before my parents get home,” I scanned the area surrounding us…

“No problem,” Jerry took charge, “let’s divde it up.” Jerry drew imaginary lines in the air seperating out our spaces. “The first to finish their area wins. He will get to have a free pass of anything. Anything,” Jerry smiled creepily at Ken.

Anything.’ That reminded me of Jenny. ‘What happened to Jenny in the end?’ Before I could ask I heard and loud, “GO!” and everyone started to swiftly clean their areas. I’ll have to ask later…

CHAPTER 5

Not everyone, I had hoped to see, was at the party. I was told that Coach, Mrs. Bailey, and Lily were on a trip. It was still a great party, but I was constantly drawn back to our talk from earlier. But I spent most of the party with Matthew, since Ken was off hanging with Jeremy for most of it.

‘It’s strange to be back.’

“So dude, how is it being back home?” Matthew and I were outside, taking a breather, by the pool.

“It’s good to be back, but it feels different. Like…” I couldn’t really put my finger on it.

“Like you are a vistor and not the resident,” Matthew answered.

“Exactly. Wait…how did you know what I was trying to say?” I glanced at Matthew.

“It’s pretty much what Jerry said when he came back,” Matthew took a sip cola. “I’m amazed you will be going back again. I know it’s your plan to continue swimming, but I thought you would have missed your life here, a little bit,” Matthew kept looking forward.

‘I understand what he is feeling.’ “I do miss it here. If there was a way to reach my dreams by staying, I would; but right now the only fesible way to reach them is to return back home…I mean Montana.” ‘Crap. I’m sure that doesn’t help.’ “But what are your plans for College,” I swung my arm over Matthew’s shoulders, “after all the straight A’s in high school I assume you got some prestigous scholarship?”

Silence. ‘Was I wrong?’

“Yeah. Well we will have to see. My plans are kind of up in the air due to various reasons,” Matthew shrugged and sipped his drink again.

‘What?’ But I decided not to push the issue. Mostly because Matthew’s posture told me he was done discussing it. ‘What have I missed these last two years?’

“Well we should head back in there. Your mom put in a lot of effort, and you should do your job as the main character at today’s party,” Matthew stood and pulled me up with him. “Let’s go.”

Matthew walked back into the house, leaving me wondering; ‘What on earth is going on?’

Well…the party lasted about six hours. I was exhausted; more importantly, I was surprised that Jeremy was still functioning. He and Ken had spent most of the party
together. Probably talking things out and figuring out how they would interact from now on. There was no Jenny today. Dad had mentioned that she might try to make it, but that it was a long shot; I guess she has been super busy. Hopefully I could catch her before I go back.

“Where were you dude?” Ken had walked up to me just as the last guest left the house. “It seemed like you disappeard the entire evening.”

I laughed. ‘It was more like they disappeared.’ “I was around. Matthew and I pretty much made our rounds several times these last six hours. More importantly, I am amazed you are still functioning,” I said to the half dead looking Jeremy.

Yawning before answering, “I have probably had about ten…,” first looking to Ken; Ken nodded, “yeah…ten coffees. I too am amazed I am still awake, and not having a heart attack.”

All four of us laughed together. It seemed like everything was fine between us, but I forgot there was one missing… ‘Jerry.’ Just as I thought it, Jerry came out from the kitchen, slowly walking towards us. The laughing died. Nothing was said. We five just stood there in the living room.

“So…” Mom and Dad also came out of the kitchen; they probably stopped talking seeing the weirdness of us standing around without talking.

“Everything alright son,” Dad walked towards us?

“No problem at all. Thanks mom for the wonderful welcome back party,” I walked to mom and scooped her up into a big hug. “But to thank you, why don’t you let us clean most of it up for you. You and Dad,” I paused giving Dad a signal to tell him to take mom out, “go out for a date night, and don’t worry about anything.”

“What?! We cannot leave you this huge mess…” Mom pulled away from me to head back into the kitchen.

“Hon. Let’s listen to George on this. Anyways, you deserve a break,” Dad understood and started pulling Mom to the front door. “Don’t rush Son. We will go out for a late night dessert,” they were in front of the door.

“Oooo…” Mom’s face lit up, “I can’t say no to dessert. Thank you George,” and before I could say anything Mom pushed Dad out the door.

I chuckled to myself, ‘that’s my mom.’

Chapter 4

“SURPRISE!”

Ken was not kidding; the living room looked like it was bursting at the seams.

“George!” Mom came running forward, wrapping me into a hug.

She was signifcantly shorter than me now. The top of her head was now just at my shoulder. ‘I’ve missed this. A motherly hug.’ “Hi Mom. This is my roommate, Jeremy. Dad suggested I bring him along.”

Without hesitating she stepped away from me and embraced Jeremy into a hug. ‘Haha. Jeremy looked shocked.’ He was definitely not expecting the hug, but there is nothing anyone can do about mom. Once she gets hugging it’s hard to get her off. ‘I really like that about her.’

“Hon. Let the boy go; he looks so confused,” Dad walked up to our small huddle, still by the front door.

Without thinking I walked straight to Dad a gave him a hug. It was a long awaited hug; hitting me how much I’ve missed my old man. Also, that I am almost Dad’s height; he only has about three inches on me. ‘A year and half has changed so much…’

“I missed you too son,” Dad spoke as I stepped back.

Collecting myself, “This is my roommate Jeremy.”

Dad extended his hand towards Jeremy. Jeremy recipricated, but what he didn’t expect was that Dad pulled him forward into a big bear hug. Jeremy once again looked like a deer in head lights.

“Dad let him go. He won’t ever come back if he is to expect this kind of welcome,” I attempt to pry my dad off of Jeremy.

“My bad. Go enjoy the party. I need to make a call real quick. I’ll be right back,” he directed the last part at mom, who was side glancing at him. Dad was gone.

“That man; always working. Enjoy yourself. I’m going to go check on the food,” Mom too dashed off disappearing into the kitchen.

“You good, dude?” I turned back to Jeremy.

“Yeah. Just wow!” Jeremy laughed setting his belongs down in the entry hall.

“I’ll say.” The voice came from behind us. Turning around there stood Jerry and Matthew.

“Bros!” I walked over to them and gave them fits bumps and slaps on the back. “I glad you two could make it. How was school Matthew? How’s it been, being back home Jerry? Anything new I should know?”

Silence. They were just staring at Jeremy.

I looked at Ken. As if he could read my mind, ‘Just like you earlier.’ I walked back over to Jeremy. Ken taking my place next to the guys; he started to explain.

“You good?” I asked Jeremy.

“Yeah. Just one thing after another. Your life seems to be in a whirlwind; it’s crazy,” Jeremy folded his arms in a defensive stance.

‘Ha.’ I thought my life was always pretty chill. Swim, school, eat, sleep, and repeat. Ken walked back over to Jeremy and I, bringing me back to the present.

“So…you two are friends now?…” Matthew pointed between Jeremy and me.

“Yeah,” I swung my arm over Jeremy’s shoulders. “Ken what did you tell them?” Jeremy still stood next to me; his posture still seemed to be on the defensive mode.

“I told them the gist of everything, but I didn’t know what all I could tell them,” Ken looked at Jeremy.

“So there are things kept from us; for his sake,” Jerry pointed at Jeremy.

‘Jeremy is doing a pretty good job holding back. Something I know about him and being pointed at, is it’s never a good combination; memories of his dad and old coach are probably in the forefront of his mind.’ “Ask anything,” wanting this conversation to be over.

“So. He apologized for the Jenny thing, that’s cool and all, but I can’t believe you just forgave him. He…” Jerry was all riled up. Matthew tried calm Jerry by placing a hand
on his shoulder. Ken too looked down and away.

‘What’s going on?’ “What is…” I tried to ask…

Jerry brushed off Matthew’s hand, “No. What made him into such a person? That he could say hurtful things and be forgiven easily. His life is fine, but he ruined other’s,” Jerry had taken a few steps towards Jeremy.

Jeremy’s body shiifted under my arm. I knew he was not about to hold still. Before I could do anything…

“Just stop,” Ken stepped in front of Jerry, stopping him in his place. “I left things out of the explanation because it was not my history to tell. I will say I reacted simllar to you both, but after knowing all the facts I’ve changed my opinion.” Ken paused, he looked back at Jeremy. “Can I tell them? I want to move past this.”

“Go ahead. I didn’t realize I was such a jerk in so many peoples’ eyes. Maybe I am more like him than I thought,” Jeremy huffed off my arm. But attempted to stand taller, awaiting the second attack.

Ken turned back to the guys and told them about Jeremy’s past.

I could see the understanding and realization spread across both Jerry’s and Matthew’s face. Hopefully this is the end of this. ‘Why is it so difficult for them to accept that people can change?’ Everyone changes at some point in their life; it’s called maturing. Ken was finished and backed up to us.

“Are you guys over yourselves? Everyone has some sort of crap in their life that sometimes hits them and causes them to explode. Jeremy did that day, and he has said that if he gets a chance he will apologize to her. I know things got out of hand these last two years, but it was not his fault. You can’t blame him for everything.” Ken was now actually pleading for Jeremy’s sake.

‘What?’ “What do you mean it got out of hand?” I stepped up in between everyone.

“Later. We need to pause this conversation and enjoy the party your mom has put together,” Ken stopped me; he turned to Jeremy. “They are somewhat good now. We will discuss this further tonight. Enjoy the party. Nobody,” looking at Matthew and Jerry, “will talk about this until after the party is done. Be on your best behavior,” and Ken walked off to the drink bar.

Jeremy relaxed a smidge and followed Ken.

‘I don’t know what is going on. But hopefully it will all be explained later.’

I looked to Matthew and he sighed but smiled; he came up and drapped his arm over my shoulders, “Dude, you’ve grown. You are now taller than me. Not cool. Jerry look,” Matthew angled us to Jerry. But Jerry still looked like his was fuming.

‘Why? Jeremy and him were teammates for two years, and there were no issues until he came back home.’

Jerry just walked away; he headed in the opposite direction of Ken and Jeremy. “What’s wrong with…”

“Not now, George. Or Captain Ken will chew me out. We will talk later. Let’s enjoy the party,” Matthew dragged me forward. “I’m hungry. Let’s go see if your mom’s food is done,” and we walked towards the kitchen.

‘They are all just changing the subject and not talking. I guess I find out what I am missing later.’

CHAPTER 3

The car ride was filled with chatter and laughing; mostly done by Ken and myself. Jeremy was sitting quietly in the back seat.

‘Things have really changed these last two years.’ The old diner that the old man and I ate at for so many years was closed down and boarded up. The tallest building of downtown of LA was no longer given that title.

Every once in a while I would try and bring Jeremy into the conversation, but nine times out of ten I was just waking him up. So I decided to give up and let him be.

We were finally back in my neck of the woods. ‘This is where the high school…is…’ It was no longer the red bricked building; it was now painted a starch white, and looked more like a prison with the tall black iron fences. As Ken continued to drive, I noticed that the neighborhoods were also more luxiurious. I drove for two years in these neighborhoods, and now it seemed more like a forgein place to me.

“Dude? Where were you just now?” Ken called me back to reality. “I’ve been talking to you for maybe the last twenty minutes and I just finally noticed you weren’t even listening. You good?”

“Yeah. Sorry Bro. Just things are so different here; probably it was just a bigger shock than I thought. What were you saying?”

“Nothing much. Just that the neighborhoods have gotten a face-lift due to the schools new management. I believe it was because the city wanted the surrounding area
of the school to also give off the same vibes. What did you think of the school?” Ken turned into my neighborhood.

“Honestly. It looked more like a prison than a school. With the fences I mean.”

“Those fences have always been there. Maybe you don’t remember since the building was not starch white, but yeah the fences have been like that since our freshman year. But yeah, now that you mention it, the school does look like a prison.”

“Oh. Maybe since in Montana it was different; I’ve just gotten accustomed to life up there.”

‘Strange. There was silence in the car. Ken was never quiet.’

“Well, can I ask about the extra passenger?” Ken said thumbing at the sleeping Jeremy in the back seat.

“Yeah. What do you want to know?” I settled back into the seat; knowing this conversation was expected.

“When did you two become friends?” Ken continued to look through the windsheild.

But I could feel an uncertainty in the air. “Well…” I told him everything. About how we first interacted. How we had to get over our past history and become a team. I explained somewhat about the Jenny situation. About how Jeremy had been chewed out by his coach; reminding Ken that we all labelled his coach as a screamer. I didn’t mention about Jeremy’s dad. It wasn’t my place to say; but that Jeremy couldn’t take it anymore and exploded. It was a wrong place, wrong time kind of moment with Jenny.

“Yeah. But it still doesn’t mean he should say what he did about Jenny. I can’t believe you just let that slide,” Ken said as he turned onto my street.

“I didn’t, Jeremy apologized to me about it. He explained and apologized for everything that needed an apology. Jeremy is actually a good guy. He just didn’t have the best role
models to follow.” Ken looked like he was about to argue again, “We had coach, our parents, us guys; we were the lucky ones.”

Ken nodded. He didn’t say anything because he knew he couldn’t refute that last statment.

“You forgot the most important detail,” Jeremy said while leaning forward hooking his hands onto the sides of our seats.

“Dude. I thought you were out?” I said startled for the sudden noise.

“What detail?” Ken asked.

“My dad. My dad is a real piece of work. Since the age of six, I have been a verbal punching bag for him. I can’t remember once hearing a nice thing, regarding me, come out of his mouth.”

‘That’s something I didn’t know. Wow. Since six years old…’

“The day with Jenny, I had just gotten an earful from my dad. About how I was an embarresment to him, and that I should just stop living,” Jeremy paused, probably recalling that day.

I looked over at Ken; Ken looked embarrassed, probably because of his first intial idea of Jeremy.

“Then you need to add on what my coach had told me right after. Of course my old buds were present for that screaming match. I was so embarressed that I wanted to turn
attention away from me. And…well you know…Jenny was the first person I saw. If I get the chance I will apologize to her in person. I should have never said that to her. I felt like my old man after that day; using words to degrade someone. I wish I could erase that day from everyone’s mind.”

Ken was silent as he pulled into the driveway.

As much as I wanted to get out and see everyone, I was not about to end this.

“I also should apologize to you too, Ken. I might have never said anything to your face, but I did say things to my group. Sorry man.” Jeremy leaned back.

Silence.

“Understood. But let’s move past all this sentimental crap,” Ken said turning off the engine and hopping out of the car.

‘Ken must be thinking things over.’ “Come on Jeremy. Let’s grab our gear,” I followed Ken’s pursuit.

“Sure…” He followed me to the trunk.

Ken grabbed Jeremy’s bag and handed it to him, “But thanks for the apology. Do you want to explain this to everyone inside that house,” pointing to my front door, “Or would you like me to do the honors?”

“What do you mean?” a confused Jermey took his bag from Ken.

“Well. That house is filled to the brim with people who know George. I think only Jerry and Matthew know what happened with Jenny, and they are definitely inside. Oh crap, it’s supposed to be a surprise, you have to act surprised,” Ken said towards me. “But I thought this one,” thumbing at Jeremy, “would like to know beforehand.”

‘Mom.’ “My mom loves being a hostess. Be happy it is no longer my biological mom; she would have chewed you out the moment you stepped into her house. ‘Thankfully it is not her.’

“Thanks for the heads up. Maybe you could drop me off at a hotel…” Jeremy said backing away from the house.

“Nope. Everyone is expecting George and his roommate,” Ken walked behind us and started shoving us towards the door. “But that’s why I said I could explain to the other guys about you? Only to the ones that might know you.”

“Thanks bro,” Jeremy swung his arm over Ken’s shoulder.

Ken shrugged it off, “Not your bro yet. But knowing this guy,” smacking me on the shoulder, “it won’t be long.”

‘Ouch. Why does he keep doing that? But I can’t kill the messenger.’ “You are lucky you are helping Jeremy out, or you would be dead right now,” I side glanced at Ken.

We were almost to the front door; we were walking slow. We were waiting for the conversation between the three of us to be done, before we opened the can of craziness in front of us.

“You two are the same as before. I wonder how the other guys will feel about my presence?” Jeremy stepped backward a step to be the third person through the door.

Ken laughed, “Let’s be honest. Their reaction is going to be pretty similar to mine. Enough talk. Let’s go!” Ken pushed open the door.

CHAPTER 2

‘Well Coach Jones has made me a liar.’ He gave us a week off for a real vacation. We are allowed to travel home, but that we need to continue to train personally. Because when we get back, we are going to travel South to Bozeman.

Also Coach Jones said, “College is going to be fast-paced. Enjoy this vacation, because you will only get a handful of days off these next four years.”

‘Great…and great!’ I will take this time off and travel home! Since life has been so busy this last year I haven’t kept in touch with the guys as much as I wanted. I haven’t seen Jerry for about three months. ‘I’m actually pumped to go home.’

‘Got to call the old man’, “Ring…Ring…rin…Dad?”

“Hey Son. This is a surprise, how’s it going up there?” Dad’s voiced echoed.

“All is good. But I’m coming home for about a week. Will you and Mom be home?”

“What a treat!,” Dad voiced echoed louder, probably because he moved the phone away from his ear as he spoke, “Honey…George is coming home this week!” I heard a happy girlish sqeal in the background noise, and a very loud, ‘Yippee!’” Dad’s voice now was more clear and he chuckled before continuing, “I don’t know if you could hear her, but your mom is super excited. Be ready for a big welcome home party.”

“Sounds good to me, and yes I could hear her,” I laughed.

“Me too,” Jeremy said behind me, “in case she was curious how loud she can be,” Jeremy laughed as he too was packing his bags.

“Who was that, son? Girlfriend?”

I laughed and almost dropped my phone, “Nope. Its my roommate Jeremy. He said he could hear Mom too.” Dad just laughed and laughed.

“What’s your roommate going to do for the vacation?” Dad asked as the laughter died down. “If he doesn’t have anything, bring him along. I would like to meet the young man that you have been growing up with. And it’s all on me. But Son, I’m sorry, but I have to go. I only stopped by home for a quick lunch and I need to head back. Do you need anything else?”

“Nope… Well, are you going to pick us up? It will cost a fortune for me to get an uber,” I looking up prices as we spoke.

“Don’t worry about it. I will come get you, and if I can’t, for some reason, I’ll send someone. But got to go. Bye Son,” Dad said and hung up before I could reply.

‘It was good to hear his voice. It had been a while since I actually talked to him.’ Seeing him in person tomorrow is going to be awesome but also strange. Turning to Jeremy, “So what are your plans for this vacation?”

“I was going to spend it with my mom, but she is on a cruise with my aunt; for a ladies escape..I think that’s what they called it…” Jeremy continued to pack his bag. “So instead, I’ll be going home, and hanging out. At least it is a break.”

“Well your idea sounds interesting, but my dad was curious if you would like to come back with me?”

Jeremy stopped and turned to me, “Why?”

“His words, ‘I want to meet the young man I had grown up with these last two years,’” I hope my impression of my dad was great.

Jeremy laughed, “Your dad seems really cool. But are you sure? I would be coming along with you on your vacation.”

“No problem about it. And my mom is like, ‘the more the merrier,’ type of person. Do you want to come?” I say as I flip open my laptop to book the flights.

“I would, but the expense of it all. Yeah, I was already planning on flying to California, but the expense of room and board… I don’t think I can swing it,” Jeremy sat down on his bed.

“All expenses paid. My dad already said so. Are you coming? I am booking the flights now,” I said pointing at the screen.

“Wow. Okay. I guess I am coming,” Jeremy walked over to my bed and help me decide on the seats.

‘I wonder if it will be Dad or his assistant?’ We were already at LAX. We had somewhat agreed on the earliest flight. It was six-thirty in the morning now, and the sun was beginning to rise. Unlike Jeremy; he seemed to be slowly slinking down closer to the ground. “Dude, pick yourself up and look alive. LAX is busier than the airport back home.” ‘Home?’ Weird, that came out of my mouth about Montana.

“Uggh…fine. Why did I let you talk me into this early. I am so dead. When will the ride be here?” Jeremy said pulling his body up, but not his attitude.

“Wow. Whinny Jeremy is back. It’s like you gave gone backwards two years of maturity. But the ride should be here soon.” ‘Where is dad?’ I look down the line of cars. I saw arms flailing across the line of cars in the center divider. ‘Who…?’

Jeremy was now just beside me, “Isn’t that your old bud…what’s his name…the one that was always talking smack…”

“Ken.” Ken was here! Without Jeremy, I started walking to the crosswalk. ‘Why is this light so slow.’ I hadn’t seen Ken in almost a year and a half. ‘…Green!’ I was off to the other side. I just assumed Jeremy was following.

“Dude!” Ken left his driver side door and ran towards me.

‘Ken was almost them same.’ Yeah it had been two years, but Ken was still the same height. However, he had bulked up; as he lifted me into the air for a hug. “Okay. Okay. Let me down,” he was cutting off circulation to my limbs. Thankfully he listened and put me down.

“I can’t believe you are back! Your dad told me to pick someone up at the airport. I had no idea it was you, until I saw you,” Ken tried like always to swing his arm over my shoulders. “When did you get so tall? You weren’t this height at your dad’s wedding were you?”

‘I forgot. That is another change. I am six-foot one inch.’ Unless Matthew grew, I am the tallest of the guys, and according to the physician at school I will continue to grow until I am about twenty-two. “No. I have grown in the past year and a half, and I’m told it will continue,” I turn remembering I brought someone with me. ‘Where is he?’

“Who are you looking for…” Ken’s words drowned off.

I followed his eyeline. ‘Yep. He found Jeremy.’ “Hurry up will you?” I yelled at Jeremy, as he dragged his butt over to where we were standing.

“I didn’t realize you had left. I turned and you were not there anymore. Oh,” Jeremy realized Ken was staring at him, “hello Ken.”

Ken looked at me. I nodded. He looked back at Jeremy, “Hello Jeremy. Let’s head out,” Ken walked back to the driver door and climbed in.

“I guess, you didn’t tell your friends about me…” Jeremy and I started towards the car.

“Well we weren’t really buds until after my parents wedding. Let’s just get going,” I threw my bag in the trunk and climbed in the front seat. I didn’t know if Ken would wait for Jeremy, but thankfully he did. Jeremy got in the backseat, and we were off.

If you have not read this first part, I would suggest doing so first. Or you will not have the back story.

CHAPTER 1

‘Okay.’ So you are probably saying to yourself, “College? What happened to the Monatana High School?” Which is my bad. As soon as Jerry and I got to the school it was non-stop.

I am surprised I was able to get a B avaerge those two years, because of all the swimming I did. I had morning practice everyday, plus an afternoon weight lifting session every other day, and afternoon practices everyday. So please cut me some slack for not finding time to write down my thoughts.

I have a moment now; it is currently summer “vacation” before college. Not really a vacation, but before I start this new chapter of college life I will recap some of the highlights.

Where to start…Well I guess the team line up for highschool was interesting; there were two familar faces and quite a few new ones. There were about thirty swimmers total on the team. The familar ones were Timothy and Jeremy.

‘Believe me, it was a strange realization for me as well.’ Which when I saw Jermey, that first day on the pool deck, I thought I was seeing things. Jerry made sure to keep us at a distance. Which really didn’t make a difference because the A relay became: Me, Timothy, Jeremy, and a new guy named Antonio. Antonio was the breaststroker. But this layout for the relay meant Jeremy and I had to move past our differences from the get go, to succeed.

Which we did. The A Relay placed first at every meet; we were unstoppable. Coach Jones was amazing. He devoloped my straight arm freestyle into a force to be reckoned with. I wasn’t always swimming the one hundred freestyle, but when I did I dominated the pool.

Jerry was the top swimmer for the B relay and he kicked butt when he swam the five hundred. He did amazing for not wanting to continue.

‘Yeah. Jerry did not want to continue to swim after high school.’ Which I can’t blame him. When we left that airport two years ago, we had these grand ideas about traveling often and seeing family. However, we visted home…maybe…three times; we were expected to swim through the summer vacations. We visted for Christmas, Coach’s wedding, and another occasion.

‘Right!’ That’s another big thing. Coach got married to Mrs. Bailey. I guess all the babysitting turned into the three of them going on outings, and that must have caused them to find their own happiness. ‘I am so happy for Coach and Mrs. Bailey, now known as Mrs. Brown. Which yes, means Jenny’s name is now Jenny Bailey Brown.’ She wanted to keep her dad’s name with her.

‘But back to Jerry’s dilemma.’ Jerry didn’t get to see his family pretty much for two years. He wanted to go home, even though he was invited to go to Bozeman University. Which I was shocked, but Jerry’s explanation was what I expected…

“George, I’m not going to College with you guys. I’m going to go back home and go to a school closer to home. I…I…miss,” Jerry was getting caught on the words.

I understood him. “No worries dude,” I walked up and swung my arm over his shoulders, “I totally understand that you miss your family. Believe me, I do too; but since Dad has been busy with my new stepmom, I have no urgent need to head home. You do you. I will be up here another four years, and I’ll come visit when I can.”

‘I know all of you reading stopped on that word, stepmom.’ Well yeah. I got a stepmom. Drum roll please…it is Ms. Chaplen; my homeroom teacher. Well I guess now she is Mrs. Matthews. I found out when Dad drove my jeep up to me. He told me he was coming up with a surprise. I was expecting something small, but instead it was Ms. Chaplen in the passenger seat. It was an awkward meeting at first, but once I got to know Ms. Chap…I mean Mom. ‘I call her mom; it’s easier.’ But yeah, once I got to know her, outside of the classroom she was the perfect match for my dad. They told me how they met; it was actually all thanks to Coach. He set my dad up on a blind date with Ms. Chaplen, at the time, and they hit it off. ‘Yeah, he married someone who knew who he was, but Ms. Chap…Mom is still a great match.’ That was the other time I traveled down. I was my dad’s best man, so they choose their wedding date with me in mind. It was a special occasion.

Everyone was there. Dad’s music buddies, Coach’s family, my friends and their parents, various people we knew from church and town, and Jenny. Which I know she is included in Coach’s family, but that day she was in her own category. She was stunning; she was my now mom’s Maid of Honor. It was nice to see her again on such a happy occasion. That day I had all my family around me; now that Coach was Jenny’s stepdad, that meant my family circle was growing. Lily had been the flower girl; she was about half a foot taller
since Coach’s wedding. She told me that she would marry me in the future… I don’t know how I will break the news to her.

‘No. I don’t have someone in my life, yet.’ First off, I was still in high school about a month ago, but also I am doing what I said I would; I am focusing on my swimming career. I don’t know what college will bring, but I will be staying focused on what matters.

Speaking of swimming. Four other lucky people are joining me at Bozeman University next year: Timothy, Jeremy, James, and Liam. ‘Yeah, Jeremy made it.’ But honestly Jeremy has changed over the last two years. Yeah at first we were at each other’s throats, but once we got over ourselves…meaning Coach Jones made us swim together for about four-thousand yards; it was brutal, but we moved past our differences. Also after that practice, Jeremy apologized about the Jenny thing. What were his exact words…

“I was a complete jerk that day. I had just gotten an earful from my dad and my coach that I desperately wanted to push my embarresment onto someone else. I had heard about the rumors, and it just came out of my mouth before I could think. But since I was with my buds, I couldn’t take it back and I had to act the part. I am sorry.”

‘I was surprised too.’ After that day we talked more. I found out about Jeremy’s dad; ‘His dad is a real piece of work.’ On the bright side, Jermey’s mom divorced him before things got too bad.

That was another day, that showed me what Jermey was going through. That day; It was about two in the morning when Jeremy’s phone went off. By the second year of school, Jeremy became my roommate. But I remember slowly waking up to a panicked looking Jeremy. He was talking quietly; probably for my sake. I sat up and turned the light on; Jeremy seemed to jump out of his skin.

“Sorry dude. Don’t worry about me and speak normal,” I grabbed my headphones and showed him I turned on music. His body relaxed and he talked a little louder. I turned up the volume and closed my eyes; letting Jeremy do what he needed.

“Geroge? George,” Jeremy was shaking me.

I open my eyes suddenly and sat up. There stood Jeremy, phone in hand. “All things good?”

“Yeah. Thanks. It would have been impossible to calm my mom down whispering to her,” Jeremy walked back to his bed and sat.

“Is your mom okay, now?” I asked not wanting to pry into his business, but it seemed like he wanted to discuss it.

“Yeah. She had an incident with my dad. She is safe,” Jeremy looked down at his hands.

“If you want to discuss it I will listen, but if not you don’t, don’t worry about me talking,” I say leaning foward in his direction. Hoping my sincerity came across.

“Thanks dude,” Jermey sighed.

I thought that was the end of it, but Jeremy’s posture changed. He seemed ridgid but also relaxed.

“My dad has always been verablly abusive to me and my mom. He was always angry. I almost didn’t come to this school because I didn’t want to leave her alone with him. But that call just comfirmed my fear; he tried to…” He didn’t continue but looked me in the eye.

I understood. His dad tried, but did not succeed. I nodded.

“Well, she called to tell me. She was in the police station at the time; she was hysterical. Thanks again for letting me talk normal. I don’t know if you heard any of it, but I was just trying to calm her, and tell her she did the right thing. My parents will be getting a divorce thankfully, and I don’t know if my dad will do jail time. I know you probably don’t really want to hear this, but it is helping a lot to talk it out.”

It seemed like Jeremy was done. He also looked nervous.

“I didn’t hear any of it. I had music going; I was giving you the freedom to talk as you needed. I don’t totally understand your family’s situation, but my parents are divorced too. My mom…well my biological mom was crazy. Just like your parents, it is good that my biological parents are no longer together. But thankfully my dad just got remarried, and my new mom is awesome.”

His head lifted, “Thanks dude. I never thought you and I would have a heart to heart,” Jeremy chuckled.

I chuckled as well, “I know. It’s a little weird, but it’s good to know more about my roommate. But can we go to sleep now. Practice is in about one hour and I could use more sleep,” I laid back down in bed and turned off the light.

“I guess.” Jeremy had no other option.

‘But back to the present.’ So yeah, I have gained a new buddy and he will coming with me to Bozeman University. It is going to be an interesting four years. Speaking of,
practice is in about thirty minutes. I’ve got to get ready and head out. It might be the weekend, but there is no such thing as a day off in the daily life of a swimmer.

CHAPTER 55 END

There we stood. Jerry, myself, Ken, Matthew, Dad, and Jerry’s mom. We were about to go through security.

I nudged Jerry and gave the signal. ‘We had planned, beforehand, to give Ken and Matthew painful hugs.’ We walked towards them, but they had something else planned. Ken and Matthew surrounded us and gave us a sandwhich hug, with Jerry and I squeezed in the middle.

“You guys done?” I squirmed my head around to get my question out.

Ken and Matthew sighed and let us go. Dad and Jerry’s mom were chuckling off to the side of us.

“We will come up and visit as soon as possible. Probably towards the end of summer,” Matthew swung his arms across our shoulders. Ken gave us a two thumbs up pose.

“Photo! Ken turn towards me,” Dad had busted his phone out. “Good. Good. Now, one..two..three..say cheese!”

Ken seemed to scream “CHEESE” as loud of possible, which caused us three to bust out into laughter.

“I got a good one, and the pretty ugly expression one of the laughter. But we should probably hurry this along. You guys still have to go through security and find your gate,” Dad came towards me arms stretched out.

I accepted the hug. ‘Probably my last hug until he drives the jeep up.’ “Bye Dad.”

“Good bye, Son. Enjoy yourself, but stay focused.” Dad was still hugging me.

“You too. Try and find me a stepmom while I’m away,” I pull away from Dad.

He was chuckling, “I will try, but no promises. Any advice for your old man?”

I step away swining my backpack on, “Maybe…be picky. Choose the right one, whatever that means,” I laugh.

Jerry was getting his hug from his mom. Jerry’s mom was smiling, but I could see the hidden sadness. For a slight moment, I missed my mom; just that feeling… Moment gone.

“Dad,” I hint and nod towards Jerry’s mom.

Dad turns, looks, and then winks at me realizing the situation. Dad gave me one last hug and he walked over to Jerry’s mom.

“You ready to go, Jerry?” As I pick up my carry-on.

“Yeah. Bye Mom,” Jerry scooped up his backpack and grabbed his carry-on from Ken; then headed towards me.

Dad placed his hand on Jerry’s mom’s shoulder; to comfort her but also hold her steady. She was already beginning to sway. “Goodbye, my son. I love you,” Jerry’s mom said, but it only came out as a whisper.

“Love you too, Mom,” Jerry said as he followed my lead; presenting his ID and walking through the first gate towards our future.

I looked back through the glass wall. There stood Jerry’s mom, Ken, Matthew, and…Dad. I am going to miss him. ‘Bye Dad.’ Jerry nudged me to make me move forward. My view of Dad was gone. ‘Move forward, George. Forward.’

CHAPTER 54

We all headed out of those doors for the last time. Jerry and I stopped and looked back once more. ‘Last time.’

Almost like deja vu, I turn around and almost topple over little Lily, “Lily?”

“Uncle George,” Lily jumped for joy, spreading her arms out waiting for her hug.

I accepted. I am happy I did, because it was a hug and kiss on the cheek. ‘I’m going to miss this little one.’

“Don’t forget me, Uncle George,” Lily snuggled back down into my shoulder.

“Not possible. I will miss my little big helper,” setting Lily back down to the ground. “You’ll need to be big and help your Uncle Ken and Uncle Matthew next year. Can you do that?”

“Yes, sir!” Lily did a cute salute and moved to my left and did the same hug and kiss for Jerry.

Looking around, my other teammates were dispersing but there stood Coach, Matthew, Ken, Brit, and Jenny. If you add my dad to the mix, you would get the most important people in my life.

“Well you two better do me proud,” Coach stepped towards us and clapped our shoulders. “I do not expect any calls from Coach Jones, but if I recieve one,” Coach’s face changed to “the look”, “You better run and hide. Run and hide.”

‘Message received.’ I don’t need Coach coming all the way to Montana to kill me. “Understood!” Jerry and I said together.

“Aside from that, Congratulations and good luck. You will need it,” Coach chuckled as he scooped Lily up. “Let’s head out Lily,” off walked Coach with Lily in his arms.

“See ya later, Coach!” I yelled, and Coach stopped, turned, and nodded in my direction; then he continued to his truck.

‘My last nod.’

“Well dude. Matthew and I will be at the airport to say goodbye, so we are going to head out now. You good?” Ken slapped my back, and he dodged mine instinctively while backing away to the parking lot. Brit followed along behind them.

‘I can’t believe my hand did not connect with his face again.’ “Yeah I’m good. You good?” I turned to Jerry.

“See you in two days,” Jerry yelled, but Matthew and Ken were already halfway across the parking lot. “Let’s head out,” Jerry turned back, heading to my jeep.

But there stood Jenny. Looking over to Jerry, I could tell he understood that she wanted to talk.

“Don’t worry about it George. I’ll go catch up to them. You are going to be stuck with me for two years anyways,” Jerry started walking backwards. “See you, Jenny,” Jerry yelled as he turned and dashed off to catch up to Ken’s ride.

“See you,” Jenny said only loud enough for me to hear, “He is not going to hear me anyways.”

I nodded in agreement. Knowing what was going on, “Ride?”

Jenny nodded and started heading to the jeep.

I seriously did know this route by heart. ‘This is probably the last time I will be driving her home.’ “You know, this is probably the last time I will drive you home.” She didn’t say anything. I kept driving. But a sudden movement caught my eye. Did she wipe away a tear? I pulled over, “Are you okay, Jenny?”

Jenny sniffed and again wiped at her face.

‘She was crying.’

“Yeah I’m good. Just you saying this is the last time hit me that, that is true,” She tried to compose herself and turned to face me. “My best friend is leaving me.”

I honestly have no words. I thought she would be somewhat upset, but I never expected tears. ‘I don’t know what to do when a girl cries, with me in mind.’ “I will be back at some point. Either two or six years.”

“Six years!” Jenny blurted out.

‘Nice dude. You are an idiot.’ I took the time and explained to Jenny about the college in Montana; that they only take a few from the Montana High school. That it is a very pretigious school that takes only the top five from each swim high schools. I probably gave her more information than she needed.

“Okay. I understand, but wow. I didn’t realize you would be gone so long,” Jenny turned her body away and towards the window.

‘There she goes shutting me out again.’ I pull the jeep back onto the road. ‘I don’t understand girls,’ pulling into her driveway. ‘Probably the last time I’ll pull into this driveway.’ This time, I turned the jeep off and got out with her. “Since its the last time, I’ll take you to the door; I might as well make it one of a kind!”

She giggled.

‘At least she giggled.’ We had reached the door. ‘Should I?’ I turned to her.

Jenny stood awkardly next to me; she was shifting from one foot to another.

‘Screw it.’ I pulled her into my arms and gave her a hug. “I’ll miss you, Jenny.” Her body relaxed into my embrace. ‘Why does she fit perfectly?’ “But don’t worry. I always visit my family.”

Jenny’s body pulled away; she caught my gaze, “You still see me as family?”

“Of course. Just like Dad, Coach, the guys, and Brit. My family,” I released her from my hold. ‘We’ve been like this too long.’ We each step away. Backing up towards the jeep, “See ya, Jenny. I’ll see you again.” I turn and walk. I buckle up, put the jeep in reverse, I start to roll back, and I see Jenny. She was still standing where I left her. I roll down the window and wave.

Jenny nods and waves at me to go first.

‘All good.’ I roll the window up, back up onto the street, and head forward. Jenny’s house disapears from my rear view mirror. This was another strange feeling. Knowing it would be years until I saw that house again…

Heading home.
